We Need You! Volunteer Drive!

March 2, 2013

The Wild Ramp is a year-round local food market that is staffed solely by volunteers. We need several volunteers just to fill the shifts of one day. Multiply that by 5 full days that we are open, and we need a lot of help just to keep the market running.

Last summer, the Wild Ramp was in its infancy and managed to survive with 2-3 volunteers per shift. This year, we anticipate more producers, more product and more customers. We need more volunteers!

Therefore, we are kicking off the 2013 Wild Ramp Volunteer Drive!

Our goal is to sign up 50 new volunteers.

As with everything else we do, we need your help. Can you recruit for us? Friends, neighbors, family members, congregations, teammates. Anyone can volunteer.

But wait, there’s more! A fabulous prize will be rewarded to the person that can get the most people to show up to orientations or sign up for a shift. What’s the fabulous prize? Money to spend at the Wild Ramp.

There will be two orientations in March for new volunteers. The first will be Sunday, March 17. This is the first Sunday in Cabell County Schools’ Spring Break, perfect for teachers that might be able to help us over the summer.

The second orientation is scheduled for Monday, April 1. Times will come. Arrangements can be made for people that want to volunteer, but can’t attend an orientation.

It’s simple, right? Get the most people to volunteer > They tell us you sent them > You get a gift certificate.

Why should you volunteer at the Wild Ramp?

+ Help/Give back to your community
+ Meet new people who have a similar passion for locally sourced, healthy food.
+ First to know about new products, first dibs when food comes in.
+ Meet the producers of the food you eat.
+ Learn what really came first — The chicken or the egg!
+ Earn community service credit.
+ A good resume builder.
+ Be a part of the growing downtown scene.

Who can volunteer?

+ Anyone over the age of 16 can volunteer.
+ Teachers with free time on weekends and the summer.
+ Gardeners hoping to earn community service credit.
+ Individuals who want to fill some time.
+ Groups (churches, rec teams, fraternal organizations).

Do I need to be a Friend of the Market to volunteer?

Absolutely not. Anyone that is willing and able can be a volunteer. In fact, we are offering something new this year. Volunteer 12 hours a month and earn a Friend of the Market membership for the next month. That’s a discount on classes, market specials, possible perks at area businesses

What if I sign up for a shift and can’t make it?

We completely understand that our volunteers have busy lives. Things happen, we know that, so volunteers that can’t make a shift should give as much notice as possible so we can try to fill that position. You can call the market at 304-523-RAMP.

How many hours do I need to volunteer?

We usually work in 4-hour shifts. There are 3 shifts in our workday. Accommodations can be made for those that need to work smaller shifts.

What is expected from me, as a volunteer?

Our volunteers help fulfill duties around the market. That includes bagging groceries, training to run the register, stocking and restocking shelves, freshening produce, wiping down tables and sweeping, and anything the Manager On Duty deems necessary.Volunteers at Cashier Counter.

Will you help? Do you know a friend or three who would like to volunteer too? Who will win the gift certificate? Attend an orientation. Join our Volunteer Facebook page or contact our volunteer coordinator, Cara Bailey, at

I would love to volunteer. I have health issues that have a mind of their own but if the work isn’t hard on my bad days I could give one day a week hopefully not Sat or Sun since those are the only days I see my family.
