Interesting Read

December 14, 2012

I recently was nominated for another blog award and got sidetracked reading through the blogs that also received the award at the same time. So enthralled by many I subscribed to them and never told you about the award. And I’m not doing that today either.

Today I want to tell you a bit about Gavin. I’ve read his blog for weeks now, enjoying what he told about how he was raising his family’s food and challenged by his concepts about sustainability. He lives in Australia, so the seasonal cycle is reversed and he is heading into summer now. He’s talked about his vegetables and his fruit trees and I was envisioning a small farm with maybe 5-10 acres. And then he posted an aerial view of his land.

My House

779 square meters is 8385.09 square feet. That is 0.19 acre. And most of that is taken up by the house and the pool (potential fish farm). That doesn’t leave a lot of space to plant much of anything. But he has fruit trees and a vegetable patch, a green house, and 2 separate chicken coops. He also has a solar collector. Some of you will especially enjoy reading about his cob oven….and what he has cooked in it.

Gavin’s blog is called The Greening of Gavin. He describes himself:

An Ordinary Australian Man Who Has A Green Epiphany Whilst Watching A Documentary, Gets a Hybrid Car, Plants A Large Organic Vegetable Garden, Goes Totally Solar, Lowers Consumption, Feeds Composts Bins and Worms, Harvests Rainwater, Raises Chickens, Makes Cheese and Soap, and Eats Locally. All In The Effort To Reduce Our Family’s Carbon Footprint So We Can Start Making A Difference For Our Children & Future Generations To Come.

He has some interesting ideas that he shows ANYONE can do. He is not wealthy, so this is NOT about a socio-economic bracket that can afford to live this way. He doesn’t live in a rural area; his suburban lot is only a bit larger than mine is in SouthSide Huntington. I live on a 50×100 in town lot.  We have a 4×16 foot raised bed in the back yard where we grow herbs and some veggies but that is it. I can not make a meal from what we have growing.

Gavin can…and does. Read his blog….you might find some great ideas there that you can use to make your own life greener.

I am only part of the way along the spectrum but most of it has been done in the past year. We are moving from West Virginia to Oregon (they will need to find a new blogger) and at that time we can implement the gardens and some of the other sustainable activities we want to do. Thanks for setting a high standard for the rest of us.
