GMO Concerns and How the Wild Ramp Offers a Way to Eat Safely

California’s Proposition 37 (requiring labeling of GMO foods), which will be decided on Election Day, has begun to make more and more people aware that most processed foods and many whole (raw) foods in the grocery stores are made with ingredients that have been genetically altered. I know when I learned that foods that I had fed my children since the mid 1990s had been altered down on a genetic level, I was worried. As a mom I had done my best to raise them with a healthy diet and now, I can only wonder if my daughter’s gastric-intestinal issues are related to decades of eating foods that affected her. The government and the companies who have produced these products say they are safe. The scientists who study them have raised serious concerns.

So, one of my first reactions was to throw my hands up in frustration  If so many of the foods we eat are affected, how can we avoid this.  But then, breathing slowly, I realized that the Wild Ramp offers a way to avoid some of the problem.

When a local farmer agrees to provide food to the Wild Ramp, a visit out to the farm is arranged. When I visit the farm I learn what practices they have to produce the wonderful food they bring and in doing so, learn that our Wild Ramp Producers do everything they can to raise healthy food.

For the plant crops, it starts with the selection of the seed. Farmers who raise GMO crops must purchase seed annually from the manufacturers, like Monsanto.  Many of our Wild Ramp Producers save seed from their crops, especially the ones who grow heirloom varieties. Those are the tomatoes, the peppers, and more that look a bit different from anything you have ever seen at the grocery store. And when you eat them, and their flavors explode in your mouth, it is hard to ever go back to grocery store produce.

For the animal products (meat, eggs, dairy) it starts with the animal. Farmers either have a herd or flock that was part of their own breeding program or they obtain chicks or calves or kids from known sources which are healthy.

It continues with the farming practice. Most of our crop Producers do not use chemical herbicides and pesticides as a standard farming practice. The few that do are precise with its application timing as well as searching for organic alternatives.  All of our animal product Farms do not use antibiotics, steroids or hormones in their normal feeding practice. All chickens are free range. All cows are grass fed.

      I know I was surprised to learn about GMOs just a few months ago and horrified that I had had no idea about how our food was made with these foods. I support labeling! Let us know and be able to decide!
