Why Cook At Home From Scratch?

August 7, 2012

It’s so much easier to go to a fast food joint for supper or to pop a frozen meal into the microwave. Why should you consider taking the time to cook at home from scratch?  There are lots of reasons….here are a few of mine:

1. Cost Savings: If I buy a meal at McDonalds, it costs me between $5 and $6. A family of four can cost almost $30!  You could feed the same meal at home, made from scratch for under $10. Or less! Check out this book!

2. Control of Ingredients: Frozen meals you pop into the microwave are full of salt and chemicals. Read the label sometime….anything you have trouble pronouncing is probably a chemical you can avoid if you cook from scratch.  Chemicals are added to packaged food to preserve them, add color and flavors. Think about it. If they need chemicals to make something tasty or appear nice, something is not natural but being made to look that way….in other words, fake.  And think about what it does inside your body. When you cook from scratch you control the nutrition going into your body and help improve your family’s health.

3. Producer, not Consumer: Cooking is a proud life skill. Being able to prepare a meal for yourself or your family is a skill that puts you in control. Presenting food that is nutritious and flavorful is an act of love that has been carried on for generations.

4. Reduced Waste: Fast food meals are wrapped in lots of paper. Frozen meals come in plastic coated boxes. Trash trash trash. Fresh food scraps can be composted or given to a neighbor who has a garden for composting if you do not garden at all.

5. Independence, Fulfillment, and Empowerment: Being able to take a small pile of raw food and turn it into a meal that is enjoyed by your family and nutritious for their health is an act of creativity and problem solving. Instead of turning on the tv, go into the kitchen, pull out a recipe and gather ingredients and cook! Let’s start in our own homes, teach our children, and turn this trend towards obesity and health issues around!

People are not taking the time to cook…..nor teach their kids how to cook. How very sad.
